About the Event
An Introduction to Cone Beam Computed Tomography
Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scanning is increasingly used in clinical practice.
This short course for dental health care professionals will provide a ground-level introduction to Cone Beam CT. It will introduce attendees to the concept of computed tomography (CT) scanning, the development of CT and Cone Beam CT scanning and the advantages and disadvantages of this technology over other imaging modalities. Through a series of examples, attendees will learn what information can be gained from CBCT can be demonstrated and compare and contrast this technique with conventional l projectional radiography methods such as DPT, periapical, bitewing and occlusal radiography. It will discuss the clinical justifications for CBCT and introduce attendees to current guidelines and sources of further information.
Aim
To update dental healthcare professionals and improve their knowledge of new dental imaging modalities to ensure safe working practices and improved patient care.
Objectives
This course will discuss the basic physical principles by which a CBCT scanner is used to form sectional and three-dimensional radiological images. It will detail the development of Cone Beam CT scanning, the capabilities of equipment currently available together with the limitations of the technique and the factors that affect image quality. Attendees will learn the advantages and disadvantages of CBCT when compared to other conventional imaging techniques. Through a series of examples CBCT will be compared and contrasted with other imaging modalities and attendees will gain understanding of those clinical situations in which CBCT may be useful. Attendees will learn where to look for clinical guidelines, further information and training.
Learning outcomes
Upon Completion of this course, delegates will:
· Understand the basic physical principles of how CBCT units work and how it differs from conventional projectional radiography
· Be able to detail the stages in the development of CBCT and understand the capabilities of equipment currently available
· Understand the limitations of CBCT and the factors that affect image quality
· Be able to compare and contrast CBCT against other dental imaging modalities
