Speakers
Professor Mangala Patel
Mangala Patel is Professor of Dental Biomaterials in the Centre for Oral Bioengineering, in Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, at Queen Mary University of London. Her extensive experience in teaching dental materials science and biomaterials to undergraduate and postgraduate has evolved to include the application of dental materials science in the clinical setting. She also supervises numerous PhD and Maters projects.
Professor Patel's research centres on the development of novel polymeric systems (dental and orthopaedic related/biomaterials) for the delivery of therapeutic (active) species, locally within the oral cavity and in the body, and the analysis of water absorption and diffusion processes associated with drug release. The latter two are central to the clinical performance of the systems. Developing an understanding on the detailed kinetics of water absorption and release of active agents, experimental and mathematical modelling, with specific reference to delivering proteins across the oral mucosa, has benefited from interdisciplinary, international/national and industrial collaborations. Her research has resulted in patents, publications in peer-reviewed journals and a number of successful grants.
A major focus of Professor Patel’s work also involves the pastoral care and welfare of students at all levels, as well promoting the Dental School and QMUL’s strategy on equality, diversity and inclusion, to introduce positive cultural changes, for creating an inclusive environment in which all staff and students can flourish. Under her leadership the Dental School attained an Athena SWAN Silver Award (November 2018). She has also mentored numerous staff and students to reach their career goals.
Dr Ali Nankali is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Teaching and Innovation (Adult Oral Health) Centre in the Barts and the London Medical and Dental School. In 1998, he took a keen interest in Restorative Dentistry, which led him to commence his extensive research on application of post/cores and a number of novel inventions including Nankali Post System, Nankali bur and new classifications.
Dr Nankali was awarded his PhD in 2004 by National Medical University (NMU) in Kiev, Ukraine where he registered as a Specialist / Consultant in Prosthodontics. Furthermore, his Engineering background in addition to his Prosthetics and Maxillofacial clinical experiences helped him in achieving ground-breaking outcomes on his researches related to distribution of masticatory force and mechanical strength of teeth's hard tissues that brought him to the attention of the scientific community.
At his current position, Dr Nankali is involved with undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students as well as regularly running CPD courses and conferences.
